These items remain the property of Touring Cars and must be returned with the vehicle at drop-off time.
Standard insurance is included in the rental rates. This covers bodily injury of third parties as well as damage up to € 3 million to their property.
Bodily damage suffered by the renter or passengers is not covered as these persons are not classed as third parties. Touring Cars does not offer this kind of insurance as it is expected all members of the travelling party will take out their own personal travel insurance which covers their own health costs.
Touring Cars' insurance also covers:
- Damage to the exterior of the rental vehicle, regardless of how and by whom, including damage by third parties.
- Theft, break-ins and vandalism*
This insurance comes with an excess of € 2,800 per incident.
Exceptions:
Damage to the windscreen, wheels or tyres is not insured and has to be paid by the renter unless the 'Windshield & Tyre Cover' has been purchased at pick-up. Any damage to the interior of the vehicle, water-related and saltwater damage is not covered by the insurance, regardless of whether you take out one of the additional insurance options below or not.
Personal property that is lost or damaged in the event of an accident or theft is not covered by the insurance.
For other situations which are excluded from the insurance cover please see 'Insurance Exclusions' below.
Additional Insurance (7- or 10-day minimum hire applies)
You have the option of purchasing one of the following supplementary insurance options at pick-up time in order to reduce the level of the excess.
Insurance Option 1: 'Windshield & Tyre Cover' (7-day minimum hire applies)
This option covers the costs for one windscreen or tyre damage, any further damages are covered with an excess up to € 2,800. The 'Windshield & Tyre Cover' is available in addition to the insurance options outlined above and costs € 15 per day.
Insurance Option 2: 'TC Plus' (7-day minimum hire applies)
This reduces the excess to € 1,200 and costs € 18 per day.
Any damage to the windscreen, tyres or wheels is payable by the renter.
Insurance Option 3: 'TC Premium' (7-day minimum hire applies)
This reduces the excess to € 600 and costs € 29 per day.
Any damage to the windscreen, tyres or wheels is payable by the renter.
Insurance Option 4: 'TC Total' (10-day minimum hire applies)
This reduces the excess to € 0 for one external damage, for any following damages the excess is € 990 per incident. The TC Total costs € 79 per day.
A deposit of € 2,800 is required in credit card form (Visa or Mastercard only) at pick-up time, otherwise the vehicle can not be handed over. Cash or traveller's cheques will not be accepted!
If one of the local supplementary insurance options is selected, the level of the deposit will be reduced according to the level of the excess.
The deposit covers the excess and is taken as a credit card authorisation at pick-up, i.e. no money is deducted from the card at that time but the credit limit is reduced.
NOTE: Touring Cars requires that your credit card is valid for at least 6 months after vehicle drop-off.
Please ensure you have adequate credit available on your credit card.
The deposit applies on a per-incident basis. If there is an accident or a third party incurs bodily or property damage a further deposit is taken for the remaining rental days to cover the excess for any further incidents.
The deposit will be refunded (i.e. the authorisation will be deleted) as long as the vehicle is returned on time, free of damage, clean, with full gas bottles and full fuel tanks. Neither the rental company nor the tour operator is liable to pay any cost differences that possibly occur between the cost of the deposit and the reimbursement resulting from foreign exchange fluctuations or external fees.
The rental company reserves the right to charge fees to cover damage, cleaning, late drop-offs, fines or parking tickets, etc. Any fees are deducted from your credit card in arrears or will offset the reimbursement of the deposit.
The excess is always owed to the rental company by the renter in the first instance, regardless of who is at fault. If an accident occurs with an uninsured driver or if another driver flees the scene of an accident the renter is liable for the full amount of the excess. The excess is refunded if and as soon as the rental company receives a payment from a third party. This can take quite six months or longer.
All insurance cover will be null and void if the terms of the Touring Cars rental agreement are breached. Any damage that is caused if the renter acts outside of the rental company conditions is not covered by the insurance.
Any water and/or saltwater related damage where the renter is at fault is not covered by the insurance. This includes any damage to the underbody or roof or roof appendages.
The insurance also does not cover any loss or damage of property as a result of a break-in or accident.
The insurance does not cover damage in the following cases and the renter is liable for the full amount of damage caused either to the rented vehicle or to the property of a third party involved:
- vehicle submersion, the vehicle being stranded in a water area
- damage resulting from creek or river crossings, driving through causeways or beach driving
- activities that are in breach of the rental agreement conditions, e.g. driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or dangerous driving
- damage caused by the use of the wrong fuel or when water or oil, etc. are not topped up to minimum required levels (causing overheating, frost damage, etc.) or where warning signals in the vehicle are ignored
- damage that is a result of not considering the measurements of the vehicle (height, width) or appendages and the underbody
- costs that arise for towing and recovery of vehicles that have been stranded or submerged as a result of the driver's negligence
- repairs and towing costs that are incurred because of driving on unpermitted roads or in forbidden areas
- costs for vehicle keys that have either been lost or locked in the vehicle
- if people drive the car who have not been registered in the rental agreement
- personal property that is damaged in an accident or is either stolen or damaged during theft is not insured
- if damage is caused as a result of other people using the vehicle without the permission of the rental company there is also no insurance cover
- if the vehicle is stolen because the keys were left in the vehicle or the vehicle is not locked
- wilful damage
The following incidents are payable by the renter separate to the insurance, unless you purchase the appropriate additional insurance option (see table above):
- Damage to the windscreen
- Damage to tyres or wheels
Prohibited Activities
The renter is prohibited from using the vehicle:
- to participate in motorsport or vehicle testing activities
- as a means of transportation for inflammable, poisonous or otherwise dangerous substances
- to commit crimes of any kind (including cross-border activities) even if such activities are only punishable by the laws prevailing where such crimes are committed
- to rent to a third party
The renter is liable for any fees, costs, fines or penalties that occur during his/her use of the rental vehicle unless any such costs that have taken place are the fault of the rental company.
If speeding tickets and parking fines and/or accidents, etc (e.g. that have not been mentioned to the rental company) come to light the rental company reserves the right to invoice or charge the customer for these costs in arrears as well as a processing fee.
Note: fines in Iceland are very expensive.
The insurance options offered by the rental company do not include luggage insurance, nor do they include cover for any damage to passengers. It is therefore recommended to obtain travel insurance that covers accidents, sickness and loss of luggage prior to departure.
All drivers must have held their national driving license for a minimum of 2 years on the pick-up date. UK, European Licenses (Category B), Australian or New Zealand licenses for example are valid. The national license is sufficient for renting a vehicle in Iceland. If you present an international license the national license will also be required - no exceptions.
Additional drivers can be registered locally and the following compulsory fees apply, which are payable locally:
Per additional driver: € 49
Any person wishing to drive must have all of his/her details entered in the rental agreement and must be present at pick-up time in order to sign the rental agreement. Every additional driver has to be in possession of both a valid national driving license and a valid credit card. Anyone else will not be allowed to drive at all. The renter is required to have access to the name and address details for any person who drives the vehicle - even if they drive for a short amount of time, and to provide these details to the rental company upon request. The renter is responsible for the actions of all drivers.
Before you can collect your vehicle you are required to present a valid national driving license, credit card (compulsory - no exceptions and no bank or debit cards or pre-paid credit cards accepted), your passport and the Motorhome Bookers voucher at the depot.
The minimum age for the renter and any registered drivers is 22 years. All drivers must have held their national driving license for a minimum of 2 years. Anyone younger will not be permitted to drive the vehicles.

Diesel Option (payable locally):
At pick-up time all rental vehicles are provided full of fuel and they are required to be returned full of fuel also. If not, the rental company will charge a fee of € 26 + € 2 per litre of diesel to fill it up.
Child seats - if required - need to be requested when you make your booking to ensure availability when you pick up your vehicle. Please provide us with the age(s) and weight(s) of your children when you make your booking so that we can book the appropriate seat(s).
Seatbelts are compulsory and child seats are compulsory for children weighing up to 36 kg or up to 135 cm in height.
In every vehicle you can at least attach 2 baby- or 2 child- or 2 booster seats or a combination of 2 of these. If you are travelling with more than 2 children, please do inform us ahead of your booking so we can request a motorhome with more mounting possibilities.
Neither Touring Cars nor Motorhome Bookers can be held liable if these are not reserved in advance and not available at pick-up time such that the children can either only travel illegally or not at all.
The vehicles are only permitted for use on sealed, public and authorised roads within Iceland. There is a restriction for driving on roads marked with an "F", vehicles cannot be taken on these roads. Driving on highland roads is also prohibited.
Many roads in Iceland are loose gravel roads and very narrow. Bridges as well are often only suitable for one car at a time. Road speeds on gravel roads should be kept to a minimum.
Weather can also change suddenly and winds can be very strong. It is strictly forbidden to drive the vehicle when wind speed exceeds 15 meters per second. In a case like this, find a spot where you can park the vehicle with the front facing the wind and stay in the vehicle until the weather calms down.
It is not possible to travel outside of Iceland.
Failure to adhere to the driving restrictions/rules will result in all insurance being null and void such that the renter is required to cover any costs incurred in prohibited regions, even in the event of a breakdown or damage that is not the renter's fault.
The vehicle is also not allowed to come into contact with salt water.
Note: Please take the time to obtain information from the authorities responsible for the country in which you plan to drive, or from an automobile association with regard to special rules that may apply in that country.
Please note that the renter is liable for any damage to the vehicle resulting from frost, exposure to the cold, freezing of the tanks, warm water tanks and connections and damage such as this is not covered by the insurance.
If it is likely that you will experience temperature levels below zero, all connections such as water and chemical tanks should be emptied. If frost temperatures are expected the rental depot will have already winterised the vehicle by emptying the water to avoid freezing, etc prior to your pick-up date. Winterised, by definition, means that the water has to be emptied out of all water tanks. Following this it is not permitted to pour any more water into the fresh water tank and none of the water connections can be used any more.
No water in the vehicle is available for use.
The renter is then required to purchase his/her own bottled water (e.g. drinking water) and to cover these costs him/herself. The basins, sink, showers and toilets can no longer be used. However, the toilet can be partially flushed as long as only the windscreen wiper anti-frost fluid is used. If there is a heavy frost the toilet should not even be flushed like this and you will need to use public toilets.
The renter bears all responsibility for ensuring the vehicle remains winterised and for returning the vehicle in this state if the vehicle was collected in a warmer region such that the vehicle was not winterised or if this state is altered during the rental period. If the renter does not adhere to these guidelines - regardless of what weather conditions are present at drop-off time, a fee will be charged and the deposit will be withheld until the vehicle is again winterised by a specialist and returned to the rental company.
The renter will be held responsible for any costs resulting from the vehicle being damaged such as when the tanks, engine elements and pipes are damaged due to freezing, frost, etc. In such cases there is no insurance cover and additional fees will be charged by the rental company regardless of the weather situation at drop-off time.
Please allow for the fact - when planning out your route, that camping grounds in certain areas may close during the winter. Some roads, especially in alpine areas may also be closed for driving or may be simply too dangerous to drive on.
One-way rentals are not available in Iceland.
Reykjavik

The rental depot in Reykjavik is open daily from 0800 - 1800hrs between 01 May - 30 Sep, and is open on request only between 01 Oct - 30 Apr.
You can pick up the vehicle as follows:
- at the depot only
- a pre-arranged pick-up time is required
Touring Cars requests that the pick up time appointment should be made at the time of booking. If this does not happen the pick-up time will be stipulated by Touring Cars. Any deviation from this time will result in additional fees.
Pick-up can take place betweeen 0800-1800hrs only, pick-ups and drop-offs out of this time are not possible.
The vehicle is provided full of fuel and the propane gas bottles are full at pick-up time.
You are required to allow the experts at the pick-up depot to provide you with a detailed vehicle briefing. Touring Cars reserves the right to withhold the handover of a rental vehicle until this has taken place and does not take responsibility for any delays that may be incurred as a result.
You can drop off the vehicle at 1200hrs only unless you pre-arrange a different time with the rental company.
Touring Cars stipulates that if a drop-off time other than 1200hrs is requested, this should be made at the time of the booking. If this does not happen the drop-off will have to take place at 1200hrs. Any deviation from this time will result in additional fees.
There are no refunds if you return the vehicle earlier than the drop-off date booked. Late drop-offs will not be allowed on the basis of any delays that may have occurred at pick-up. If the vehicle is not returned to the agreed depot and/or not at the agreed time Touring Cars will charge an additional fee of € 50 per hour. The rental company reserves the right to charge the customer for any revenue lost as a result of a vehicle being returned late where other rentals are then delayed or have to be cancelled. It is not permitted to unilaterally alter the rental agreement to one with an open-ended drop-off date (by keeping the vehicle for a longer time) beyond the date agreed with the booking.
If the vehicle is returned in a damaged state the rental company will charge fees accordingly in line with the insurance conditions. The motorhome must be returned with a clean interior. The toilets and waste water tank need to be emptied before drop-off otherwise fees of € 250 will be charged. The fuel tank has to be full at this time, otherwise a one-off fee of € 26 + € 2 per litre will be charged. The propane gas bottle also have to be returned full, otherwise € 95 will be charged for the bottle to be refilled.
TIP: if your return flight is at midday or earlier we recommend that you drop off your motorhome at the depot on the day before your flight and spend the night in a hotel.

Transfers from/to downtown hotels in Reykjavik or from/to Blue Lagoon are available against a fee and can be booked through us in advance, together with the rental vehicle.
The transfer will only be available as long as it is requested with your booking. You can select the required transfer(s) during the booking process and provide Motorhome Bookers with your arrival and departure information. For transfer fees, please refer to the booking form on our website.
The fleet consists of TC Mobiles, Dethleffs, Hymer and Hobby vehicles.
However, it cannot be guaranteed that in certain circumstances a vehicle model from an alternative manufacturer will not be provided. The vehicles are normally kept in the fleet for up to 4 years, occasionally 5 years.
Touring Cars will do everything possible to ensure that the vehicle model you receive matches the one booked exactly.
However, it reserves the right in unavoidable circumstances to provide a suitable vehicle of the same or a larger size as a replacement if for some reason your vehicle is not available or if the booked vehicle has been damaged without fault of the rental company. In such cases Touring Cars will reimburse the difference that exist between the price of of the booked vehicle and the one received and no additional rental costs will be charged if a larger vehicle is provided than the one booked. Any additional costs such as higher petrol costs, tolls or ferry costs, etc will not be reimbursed and need to be paid by the renter. This does not give the renter the right to cancel his/her booking.
Note: You will be guaranteed a vehicle from a certain category but not of any specific size, make, colour or design. Even though vehicles within a category have similar equipment, the design, size, measurements and floor plan (e.g. bed sizes or interior features, etc) may differ slightly within one vehicle category.
All measurements and size indications are approximate values and are based on the information provided to us by the rental company. We cannot accept responsibility for any mistakes or human error in the provision of these details. This kind of information on our website can be changed at any time without prior notice.
In the event of an accident, breakdown or technical difficulties (including problems with tyres) you are required to inform the rental company immediately.
If you have an accident, there is a fire or theft or you hit a wild animal, etc the police and Touring Cars must be contacted immediately. Third party demands are not to be agreed to.
In an accident the police report must include the name and address of the people involved as well as any witnesses along with the vehicle registration details of any vehicles involved. Even in the case of minor damage the renter is required to provide Touring Cars with a detailed written report and a sketch outlining the situation.
Note: If you do not inform the rental company and police immediately and if the company is not given the opportunity to provide assistance as soon as a problem arises there will be no grounds for compensation.
All vehicles are relatively new and are serviced to the highest standards. However, problems can still occur from time to time. Please note: small repairs or expenses that are necessary to ensure the smooth running and well-being of the vehicle that cost up to € 50 can be carried out without prior communication with the rental company and will be reimbursed to you at drop-off time as long as you keep receipts for the costs incurred.
For repairs that will cost more than this amount you are required to inform the rental company before repairs take place to obtain their approval to proceed (otherwise the repairs will not be reimbursed). Receipts are always required.
In the event of damage (mechanical breakdowns, not accidents) where the vehicle can not be used for longer than 24 hours Touring Cars will refund the daily rental rate (or pro rata) for the vehicle. However, other costs such as hotels, rental cars, lost holiday time is not compensated by them.
The vehicle has to be returned with a clean interior and empty toilet and waste water tanks. Exterior and standard interior cleaning is included in the vehicle preparation fee. If the tanks are not emptied and two hours of interior cleaning on the part of the rental company are not enough to remove large amounts of dirt, dust, etc a fee of € 250 will be charged.
The vehicle must be returned with a full tank of fuel. Otherwise, € 26 + € 2 per liter will be charged at drop-off. The propane gas bottles are also required to be returned full. Otherwise, a fee of € 95 per used gas bottle will apply at drop-off.
Pets are only permitted when requested in advance, a cleaning fee of € 199 applies. If this rule is not adhered to Touring Cars will charge a fee of € 400 at drop-off time to cover cleaning costs.
Smoking is also not permitted in the vehicles. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in a fine of € 850 at drop-off time.
